If you are looking for a vacation rental in Rome, so you can settle in for awhile and live like a local, check out Rome-is-Home, Massimo and Biancamaria’s 1bed/1bath apartment in the center of Rome.
We spent two weeks in this neighborhood, near Piazza Navona, during Christmas 2003 and loved being right in the center of things. We walked by the Pantheon (see photo above), my favorite building in the world, every day.
The time between Christmas and New Year is not the ideal time to go to Rome, in my opinion. We had very cold weather, which was to be expected, but the crowds of people in Rome were shocking. People from all over Italy come into Rome for the holidays. Literally, you could not get inside some of the caffes because of the crowds. Next time, if I wanted to be in Rome in the winter, I would go earlier in December or after the first week of January.

I agree with your idea for a pre- or post-Christmas visit!
It might be nice to arrive for the Epiphany celebrations (January 6), and then stay for a couple weeks after. In Venice, at least, there was a marked reduction in the number of tourists after Jan. 6th.
