Spain has 17 regions called comunidades autónomas. We have used the official regions, but have grouped some together and listed the main cities separately.

Cities in Spain

Barcelona: This lively city on the Mediterranean coast near the border with France, was the birthplace of Art Nouveau architecture at the end of the 19th century.

Madrid: Madrid, Spain's capital and largest city, is also the geographic center of the country.

Northern and Central Spain

Northern Spain: These regions stretching along the northern coast of Spain are popular with travelers because of the historic towns on the coasts and in the mountains and the regional food and wine. Regions - Galicia, Asturias (Principality of Asturias - Principado de Asturias), Cantabria, Basque Country (País Vasco), La Rioja, Navarre (Foral Community of Navarre - Comunidad Foral de Navarra)

Central Spain: These regions in central of Spain are not the main tourist areas but have many things to see and do. Regions - Castile and León (Castilla y León), Aragon (Aragón), Castile-La Mancha (Castilla-La Mancha), Extremadura

East Coast: These regions, stretching along the Mediterranean from the border of the Andalusia region to the border with France, are popular beach destinations. Regions - Murcia (Region of Murcia - Región de Murcia), Valencia (Valencian Community - Comunidad Valenciana), Catalonia (Cataluña)

Southern Spain

Andalusia (Andalucía): This region in southern Spain is a popular tourist destination with its beaches on the Mediterranean and the Atlantic Ocean, inland mountain areas and interesting cities.

Costa del Sol: Mild weather, 300 days of sunshine and miles of Mediterranean coast make the Costa del Sol (Sun Coast) on the Andalusian coast a popular destination for northern Europeans.

Islands

Canary Islands (Islas Canarias): Seven tropical islands off the coast of Africa with beaches, volcanoes (dormant), mountains and colonial towns.

Balearic Islands (Islas Baleares): These islands (Ibiza, Formentera, Mallorca and Menorca) are in the Mediterranean, off the coast of central Spain.

Regions not included: Ceuta, Melilla - small islands in the Mediterranean off the southern coast.
