The Canary Islands (Islas Canarias) are seven tropical islands off the coast of Africa with beaches, volcanoes (dormant), mountains and colonial towns. Tenerife, in the mountainous western islands (Santa Cruz de Tenerife province), is the most popular tourist destination with resorts, high-rise hotels and apartments. The other western islands are not as developed for tourism. The eastern islands (Las Palmas province) are flatter with good sandy beaches. Maspalomas, on Gran Canaria, is a large holiday resort.
