Hello all. This will be our first trip to Dublin., We depart Oct 2nd. Is there anything we should definitely do or not do? We are very mobile seniors and plan to do a lot of walking, and possibly some daytrips. Any advice would be appreciated.

It's a decent city to walk around

Definitely do, is a very personal thing, e.g. I couldn't imagine going there, without grazing the food hall at Fallon & Byrne, but that certainly wouldn't be on the radar for most tourists.

Temple bar area is maybe worth a stroll in daytime, but it's a touristy drinking area, which I personally would avoid.

Georges st arcade perhaps a little touristy, but it has some good quirky craft etc. shops

Some nice green areas in the city, that can make a pleasant change. e.g. St Stephens green

Plenty of music pubs, some very authentic, others a little more imported / touristy. It's still a big thing here.
Choose to explore the history / historic sites that take your fancy

If wanting to eat out well, but for modest prices, there was quite a thing for 'early bird' offers around 6-7:30pm, so keep an eye out for them.

Daytrips could absolutely be pre-prepared, but 'in your back pocket' as an option to dip into as the mood takes you. No need to pre-book / ink them into your schedule.

Newgrange, the splendid neolithic passage tomb. older than the pyramids, is well worh visiting. Tours run by Mary Gibbons are the best but do book up quickly. Hilltop Treks also offer a day tour. Alternatively you could catch a train or bus to Drogheda and then local bus or taxi to Newgrnage. REMEMBER you still need to book tickets in advance.

Anotther lovely day out would be to Powerscourt Gardens and the early Christina site of Glendalough with its round towers and ruined chapels. Hilltop also do a day trip here.

For a fun evening after dinner visit the Temple Bar for a pint and some great music. The Book of Kels tour at Trinity College was a nice afternoon. Take the train to Belfast and hire a Black Cab Tour (reserve in advance) that lasts 2+ hours and tells the history of the conflict in Northern Ireland. It was the highlight of our two week driving tour of Ireland that included four days in Dublin Remember, Northern Ireland currency is the British Pound not the Euro

A couple thoughts. A tour of Kilmainham Goal was one of the most interesting things I did on my latest trip; and its location is close to the Museum of Modern Art and the largest municipal park in Europe. Also, Howth is a quick DART tram away; great seafood and views (and cliff hikes if that's your thing). Perhaps a half day there and a half day at Malahide castle (both are north of Dublin, but you'll have to change DARTs at Howth Junction). Please enjoy and report back!
