We are in the midst of a fantastic binge into the seemingly inexhaustible works of screenwriter Jimmy McGovern.....his most recent show--Care--just aired last month on BBC. Many of his shows deal with social issues but they are almost with exception beautifully written with superb casts. His career stretches back to the 1980 when he worked on the series Brookside (unknown to me). We first encountered him with the Robbie Coltrane series Cracker, an anti-hero of the first order. Recently we have watched The Street and Accused.. They are both anthology series, the former telling stories of the residents of a specific block in Manchester and the latter crime stories focusing on the defendants. Both series have casts made up of British acting royalty....among them Olivia Colman, Timothy Spall, Bob Hoskins, Christopher Eccleston, Jim Broadbent, Sean Bean, Anna Friel. Another recent series was Broken starring Sean Bean as a priest with doubts serving an inner city parish in Liverpool.
He even has written a series--Banished--about an Australian penal colony in the 18th century that I am tempted to watch.

There is lots more...some of the older programs are available on YouTube. Here is a link to the IMDb entry for him.
