BBC story : they have a transitional loan from the German government which, it is speculated, should keep them operating until November (conveniently past the late-September elections). We have a trip to Italy with them in September, and hope that's safe. At this point it's risky to book a ticket from them much ahead. If you book an American Airlines award with them, you can hope AA will find another routing, but it's uncertain whether, if it's on British Airways, you'd need to pay their exorbitant fees on awards.

Hi Andrew, I flew Air Berlin last September from Boston to Venice. The way they operated I'm not surprised that they're filing for insolvency. When we changed planes in Dusseldorf, we were supposed to be bussed to the airplane on the tarmac, but after circling around the entire airport 3 times, we ended back where we started and the bus driver quickly got on the phone. I was betting that he couldn't find the plane, and was right. we waited 20 minutes and he finally moved the bus, staying on the phone constantly until we finally got to the plane. We were late getting in to Venice. The return trip was just as adventurous. We landed in Dusseldorf and were not allowed to disembark until they found someone to unload the luggage. An hour later we disembarked and although we just barely made our connecting flight to Boston, our luggage didn't. A friend who was on our trip left a few days before we did missed her connecting flight, because of the flight being delayed in Venice and had to spend the night in Dusseldorf, catching the flight out the next day.

Yes, Alitalia is hanging on with perennial uncertainty.

Alitalia is the airline equivalent of Schrodinger's cat : both alive and dead at the same time. ;)
After they left us stranded all night during a wildcat strike, they are certainly a dead entity for me.
