Article - France's best food and antique markets

The winner, Villefranche-de-Rouergue, is NOT in Gascony -- it's in the Aveyron, a department in the Midi-Pyrénées. It is a great market, but when we were there in October, the Place Notre Dame was under construction and the market had been moved to a nearby location.

I will copy in the list from the article. They are not consistent in how they list the towns - some with region, some with department. Many places I have not heard of, but will look them up and add notes.

Villefranche-de-Rouergue, Midi-Pyrénées - south of Figeac and Cahors in the Lot

Thuir, Languedoc-Roussillon- west of Perpignan

Collioure, Languedoc-Roussillon - on the coast south of Perpignan

La Motte-d'Aigues, Provence - south east of the Luberon, east of Lourmarin

Montpellier, Languedoc-Roussillon - large city almost on the coast, west of Arles

La Ciotat, Provence - on the coast, east of Marseilles near Cassis

Braderie de Lille, Nord Pas de Calais - Lille, northern France

Saintes, Charente Maritime - north of Bordeaux

Porte de Vanves flea market, Paris - Paris

Quintin, Brittany - north central Brittany

Villefranche de Rouerge is also my top favorite market. -- I prefer to say favorite and not "best". To qualify to use the word "best", I'd have to know all the markets of France !
Collioure is where we are returning this June. We can't wait.
I like the Collioure market ok but don't find it full of variety. It does not even have a fish stand.
I would add the markets of Saint Jean de Luz, Cancale and Arles for their quality and variety and beauty.

The most colossal antique market of Paris will be held on
16, 17 and 18 May on rue de Bretagne in the Upper Marais, taking up not only rue de Bretagne but all the side streets.
Vendors come from as far as the Mediterranean for this 3-day market always held in the spring.
The things I got there through the years include: an Armani jacket (40 euro), sample clothing and accessories that the fashion houses in the 'hood practically throw out, about 10 to 20 euro per item, old damask linen napkins (a set of six) and tea towels, for the same price as the Armani jacket.
