I have asked this before but I'm zeroing in our plan. I am trying to make a moderately complex trip a bit easier and more efficient. Looking to fly into Italy in mid April, spend a week in Calabria, then fly to Malaga in southern Spain for a wedding before flying home. Seems like the best way is to fly into Naples (from Dulles Int Airport), take the train to Calabria, find a cozy B&B to use as a home base for a week (using local buses or train for day trips), then back to Naples (Ryan Air to Malaga). Then fly home to Dulles. Anyone know of a better way of doing this. Couldn't find any cheap flights from Calabria to southern Spain. And thoughts on a moderately low tourist town to use as a home base? We love low key slow travel vacations (beaches, museums, and cathedrals are fine but not top of our priority list; we prefer local food, markets, and culture). Tempted to rent a car but we're trying to keep this simple.
