Provence Chagall

Should we visit Saint Paul de Vence Chapel du Rosaire as a religious site or as art history? I ask because I seem to remember a local guide stating he would step outside for ten minutes so his visitors could fully appreciate the special ambience provided by the Chapel/

I suppose it all depends on whether you are interested in art or as a religious site...People probably have different expectations depending on their interests.

Either way, go. It's incredibly beautiful and simple, so different from other churches, chapels and cathedrals that are frequently visited. Chagall designed every part of the church at the end of his life. It's worth a visit. How you interpret it is personal.
