Cornwall in Winter

We are planning a 7 week holiday from 12th December to 30th of January. Starting in Vienna for four days, a weeks cruise visiting Christmas Markets to Nuremberg, Christmas in Prague for 4 days, Copenhagen 4 days, Edinburgh for New Year for a week and then a week traveling to Cornwall.

We want to spend two weeks in Cornwall. Either at the same accomodation or a week in each of two locations. We have rather strange criteria. Research has revealed that Chery's ancestors lived in Marthamchurch, Launcells and Poughill from the early 1600 or earlier till 1780 when they moved to Antony and then on to Australia in the 1840's. Other branches lived in Launceston, Linkinhorn, Stoke Clinsland and Antony over the same period. Obviously we want to visit some of these towns, however non look particularly scenic.

We stayed on Polperro for two days around 30 years ago and have never gotten it out of our system. We visited Clovelly for the day and it was great as well.

Why winter? Some say it is the best time of the year. No tourists. I like the idea of views of the sea in winter. Storms. Pubs or a cottage with open fire and a view of the ocean. Pretty villages in winter. Lots of photo opportunities.
See our problem?

Any suggestions?

Worimi Kathy,
Loved our two weeks in your apartment in Bonnieux 4 years ago. Apparently we missed you when in Chipping Campden last July/August. Also stayed in an apartment (in the grounds of a Chateaux) you recommended at Creancey 16 years ago. We do keep crossing paths.

Basing yourself in two locations makes sense as it will cut down on driving distances. Base yourself for a week in the north around Tintagel or Port Isaac which are both close to Marthamchurch, Launcells and Poughill.

For the second week think about either Polperro or Looe as these are close to Launceston, Linkinhorn, Stoke Clinsland and Antony.

The other alternative is to stop in Lanceton for a couple of nights, which is rather a nice market town with a ruined castle and then head down to the tip of Cornwall for the second week - either the Helston or St Ives area....

Thanks Eleanor
We visited Tintagel and Clovelly when driving from Polperro to Wells back in 1987. I have a feeling that Tintagel in winter could be quite dramatic and great photo ops. Perhaps Port Isaac or Padstow for 4 nights (3 nights Polpero) and a week in St Ives.

Parking in Polperro is a nightmare, so perhaps just three nights (two days) and then up to Port Isaac/Padstow (Which do you think best?)

Parking in Polperro is a nightmare, but hopefully shouldn't be as bad in winter....

I've not stopped in either Port Isaac or Padstow so am hesitant to advise on these. Perhaps someone else will be able to? Scenically, Port Isaac is probably the prettier.
