ETIAS implementation delayed until 2027

Following the less-than-great success of the implementation of the Entry/Exit System, the ETIAS (the electronic visa-like approval of entries to the EU from the U.S. and other countries) will reportedly now be delayed until 2027 rather than the preciously planned Q4 of 2026:

Another update: a 2027 start is in question; a chance for more of us to be over 70 and exempt from the fee.

At this point I’m starting to assume ETIAS will arrive whenever it arrives.


For travelers, another delay is probably more convenient than having the system launched before it’s actually ready, especially after the issues around the Entry/Exit System.


The main thing will be getting a firm date with enough notice for people who already have European trips booked. Until then, I’d probably avoid building any travel plans around a specific ETIAS launch window.


Hopefully 2027 is finally the one.
