It must be 25 years since I last visited.... I was sure I recognised the picture, but couldn't put a name to it.

Are these ancient ruins on the Orkney Isles?

It's not the Orkneys, but you are heading in the right direction.

The remains are in the UK - head NE from Orkney. Unlike Skara Brae the site was inhabited from prehistoric to Medieval times.

This seems to have stalled, so time for two more pictures and a clue.. We are in Shetland

Here's a hint the town It is home to the world's first known salt mine.

I love hints! I was thinking it was Austria or Switzerland because the name of the picture is lake.
Then you gave the salt clue.
I will be honest I am cutting and pasting my guess
