my sister and I plan to travel to Sicily and northern Italy in April. Has anyone had experience or run into a problem, making hotel accommodations along the way rather than before hand?

We've always booked in advance, but there are some good tourist offices and plenty of hotels, agriturismi, residences etc. that are perfectly happy taking bookings at the door.
April can be very busy, which means many hotels may be full. If you don’t book in advance, you can spend a lot of time trying to find a place you like once you are there. Rather than spend a lot of time over there finding a place, have one lined up. Also, you are going to 2 sections that are very far apart. If you want to go to Sicily and some place else, stay south where there is enough to see for the next 5 years. Then go north next trip.
We actually are going in May. I imagine it will be the same situation. We are pretty set on Western Sicily and the Italian Alps. We have both seen the highlights in Eastern Sicily.
With all due respect, going to Sicily and the Alps is like going to the U.S. and going to Maine and Arizona. My thinking is every day spent going between places is a day lost. I’ve been to at least 30:countries and I rarely spend more than 2 or 3 hours going from one place to the other.
It would probably be helpful to tell you that we are planning on a month in Italy.
