Lake District or Yorkshire Dales for next trip?

Hi, I hope to take my daughter and son-in-law to the Lake District or the Yorkshire Dales this late May or early June, for one week. We love to hike (but their stamina is much better than mine) - they're really into nature walks, which made me think of the Lake District. But we also love to visit villages, gardens, etc, and we'll have a car though we won't want to go too far with it. I'm hoping to find a rental that's near, but not necessarily in, the village. I know it's a crazy question because I plan to get to both sooner or later and I'm sure either would be wonderful. Any thoughts? Is one likely to be less crowded? Thanks!

Either would work well. Late May is half term week so both places will be busy then and you may find accommodation already booked. In early June, the hay meadows of the Yorkshire Dales should be at their best with wild flowers.

The northern part of the Yorkshire Dales is less busy than the southern area. Look at Wensleydale and Swaledale - or even into Teesdale which borders County Durham - rather than the more popular Ribblesdale or Wharfedale. Or else consider Dentdale which is a link betweeen Dales and the Lake District. and is still very much undiscovered.

Another option to throw into the mix - the peak district, which is on the edge of North Derbyshire and South Yorkshire.

Plenty of good walking, plus some picturesque villages e.g. Castleton & a fancy stately home (Chatsworth) with associated gardens.
