I’ve been reading Ian McEwan since his first collections of short stories when I was in my twenties (“The Cement Garden”, “Comfort of Strangers”). I’ve read every book except that one told from the point of view of a foetus (eek). I love his books.
His latest novel, “Lessons”, is extraordinary. An epic family saga, stretching from WWII to current times. It is an excellent view of British society. The main character is Ian McEwan’s age (McEwan was born in 1948) and it follows his life. It isn’t based on his life, but it follows along with the political and societal changes he went through. That’s why I thought I would mention it here - for Anglophiles.
