Marseille in late-June or early-July

Hello my friends! First post here and it's great to be back!! I'm currently preparing a trip to Brussels for my partner and I and from there, we will take the train to southern France. Marseille. I don't know much about Marseille, so I really want to find out what the best part to stay in is. I'm pretty sure some people will say "don't go there, it's too dangerous", but I would expect the same reaction about Naples, Rome and most large North-American cities! We'll be fine. So the Old Port, Joliette or the "Panier"?

They say the same thing about Chicago where I am from. We spend the day at the Old Port a few years ago.
