Moors Torre dell'Orologio in Piazza San Marco

Does anyone know if the Moors atop Torre dell'Orologio in Piazza San Marco still move and strike the bell every hour?

Yes, when we have been there, they still strike. The tour of the tower is something we always take (advance reservations); have taken some wonderful photos from the tower. Our last tour guide, however, kept referring to the Moors as the "naked men". Could've done without that commentary. We'll be touring the tower again towards the end of February.

Yes, they do. There's an interesting tale about them. They are supposed to represent “the old man”, the one with the beard, and “the youngster”. Basically, each hour is signaled two times: the old one rings the bell two minutes before the hour, the youngster two minutes after, as to represent, respectively, the past and the future. Fascinating.

Thank you Christine. I was told that there was a day in November when they did not strike. Odd. I'm happy to hear the "Naked Men" still do! And I am going to try my best to do that tour next time. It's been many years. Thanks again!
