North Italy

We are travelling in Northern Italy through August and September. We would love advice on best time to visit the most popular areas eg. the Lakes, to avoid the busiest times. Our way of travel is to stay in self catering places for a week or so, with a hire car but using public tran
 
September definitely quieter than August (c.f. Ferragosto holidays). I'd suggest going to less famous (non-city) places in August, plus the odd city, and then the more famous non-city places in September
 
It depends which cities, Milan for example is very quiet in August, especially the Ferragosto week because city dwellers escape to the sea or mountains, the same is true for other cities of the Po plain.....
