One Night in Milan - what area to stay?

We'll have only a one night stay in Milan enroute to France from Italy. We'll arrive by train from Bologna mid afternoon and leave by train the next morning. Initially thought I'd like a hotel closer to the train station for convenience but sounds like there could be some not so nice areas around there.

Seen we don't have a lot of time there the only thing that is on our must see list is the Duomo and would just like to enjoy wandering (window shopping, eating etc.) the rest of the evening.

It's a girlfriend and I so we want to feel comfortable out and about.

Can someone suggest that best area to stay in?

Thanks,
Linda.

I've only spent one night in Milan but we stayed at Hotel Canada, about a kilometer south of the Duomo. We found it a very convenient location and lovely little hotel with good service and decent breakfast. Within walking distance to the Duomo, but also bus and tram stops nearby to reach places like the Brera art gallery. We arrived by train from Bologna (well originating in Cetona, but train change in Bologna) and were flying home the next morning.

We usually rent apartments in the Navigli area - about 15 minutes from Piazza Del Duomo with Tram #3 at Corso San Gottardo very near Porta Ticinese. Navigli is a lively area with many restaurants and cafes yet it may not be the best option for only one night.

I suggest you skip the hotel / accommodation near Stazione Centrale. Not favorable.

If you have the budget take a hotel near Piazza del Duomo then explore on foot. You can get at drink at Biffi in the Galleria for great people watching. The hot chocolate there is delicious! Visit Duomo and take the tour. Maybe The Last Supper if you can reserve ahead of time. La Rinascente Department Store adjacent to the Duomo is impressive. Go to Il Bar, rooftop, on the 7th floor and have an aperitivo overlooking the Duomo! We had luck getting into La Scala last minute - purchased two tickets for 5 euro each about 3 years ago just an hour before the concert. It wasn't the production of Aida we had seen years ago but the concerto was lovely. Check out the Gallerie d'Italia, Piazza della Scala across from La Scala Opera - they currently have a Canaletto exhibit.

Hotel Nuovo Milano is just behind the Duomo. VERY basic but clean and comfy. Piazza Cesare Beccaria. Affordable in excellent location to walk to Duomo in two minutes! https://www.hotelnuovomilan.com/ Haven't stayed here since 2015 . . . but was a great experience then.

Hope you enjoy your stay in Milano. It's an incredible city. Safe travels :)
