I watched the new Persuasion today on Netflix. A very strange interpretation! They use mostly modern language but it is set in the correct historic times. For example, the main character Anne Elliott says Captain Wentworth is her “ex”. Another man is described as a “10”. Her father says to hide his ledgers so no one steals his identity. Her sister needs to “love herself before she can love others”.
Some articles call it the Fleabagification of Jane Austen. Anne Elliott talks straight to the camera, as was done in Fleabag. She is funny and sarcastic, nothing like in the book.
Maybe it will bring Jane Austen to younger audiences but I would have preferred it be set in modern times too.
The scenes in Lyme were filmed in Lyme Regis and on the beach near where we live - West Bay and Freshwater. Caravan parks were edited out. Here are some screen shots.
On the Cobb in Lyme Regis but they did not use the Granny’s Teeth steps that I think were the ones Jane Austen referred to.
On the beach at Freshwater, a large caravan park east of West Bay. You can see the West Bay cliffs.
Swimming in the sea! Unlikely in an Austen book.
