Photo Hunt 2019 No. 16 - Bird(s)

This week’s Photo 16 (April 21, 2019) – Bird(s).

At home, doorknobs aren’t very interesting and we have doorbells rather than door knockers. Everyone’s photos demonstrates that they are far more fascinating to photograph while traveling to places around the world. They aren’t just there to serve a purpose but are part of history and an expression of art and style. Thanks everyone.

I spotted this beautiful bird while I was visiting Iguazu Falls in Argentina. Love his/her cool blue eyebrows.

These pictures were all taken at the National Centre for Birfd of Prey in Helmsley, North Yorkshire. It has the largest collection of Birds of Prey in the north of England, with different species of owls, hawks and eagles from all over the world. Many of the birds are part of a breeding programme to release their offspring back into the wild. The birds are flown daily and in good weather they are brought out onto perches in the lawn to enjoy the sunshine, and fresh air. There are also flying sessions every day for visitors, when the handler explains a bit about the bird, where it is found and how it is trained.

An injured Great Grey owl at the Orphaned Wildlife Sanctuary near to where we live.
There are many raptors and owls there as it's semi rural, and a lot of birds live in the area.
They can't be released back into the wild if they are badly injured, as they will then become preyed upon themselves. :(

Several years ago, we did a walk along part of the Trans Canada Trail on the Skytrail Bridge which crosses the South Saskatchewan River. We noticed several people peering through the girders. Intrigued we went to find out what they were looking at. A Great Horned Owl had made her nest among the girders 150’ above the river. We could just make out one of the fledglings.
