Photos of Cliffs Falling on the Dorset Jurassic Coast

We have not been as hard hit by storms in Dorset as they have been in northern England, Scotland and Wales, but it has been raining a lot this past month. Our river in Bridport was running very high a few days ago. The fields are saturated with water making the footpaths very muddy. We have to go out walking in wellies because of the mud.

The area where we live is called the Jurassic Coast and the cliffs are dramatic, especially between Burton Bradstock and West Bay. Sometimes parts of them fall off. In the last few weeks there were three or four land slips on the cliffs near Hive Beach, a place we go often. A few years ago someone was killed in one of these, because they were walking under the cliff when it fell.

These two articles use photos from a local photographer. He used a drone to get these fabulous shots.

Article - ITV Report - Amazing shots of massive rockfall on 'Broadchurch' beach, 6 January 2016
"A huge rock measuring 70ft and weighing more than 100 tonnes has fallen from the top of a cliff popular with coastal walkers in Dorset. Unusually, the slab of cliff has fallen as a single megalith - and appears to remain intact. The rock is so large it's nearly blocked a stretch of beach near West Bay."

Article - Telegraph - Dorset cliff - featured in ITV drama Broadchurch - suffers 100 tonne rockfall at West Bay, by Lucy Clarke-Billings, 06 Jan 2016
The huge rock would leave the largest stones at Stonehenge in the shade
"A gigantic rock measuring 70ft in height and weighing over 100 tonnes sits on a south coast beach having fallen from the top of a cliff. The massive megalith broke free from the 140ft cliff face near West Bay, Dorset, after being pounded by strong waves and heavy rain in recent weeks. The cliffs are made of soft sandstone and usually the rocks break up into smaller fragments after hitting beach below but this enormous boulder remained perfectly intact."

We walked along the cliff top today but were not sure where the landslip happened. We didn't want to get too close to look over the cliff. Looking at the photos in those articles I see we walked right by it. It is in this photo - but you can't see anything from the top. The South Coast Trail goes much closer to the cliffs at this point that I had realized (between Burton Freshwater and Hive Beach, east of West Bay).
