Ravenna

I've just returned for another wonderful three weeks in Lucca, and already I'm thinking about next year's trip! I could go back to Lucca, but Ravenna is calling me.

Has anyone stayed there for a few weeks? Are there historic feeling neighborhoods with picturesque street for walking (I'm thinking Lucca and Siena), or is it all about the mosaics? I was there over a decade ago. I recall a medieval atmosphere and a flat terrain, both of which would be great, but I'm not sure of my memory.

Also does anyone know a good Italian School there. I believe there's one called "Scuola Palazzo Malvisi". I would be interested in any first-hand experiences.

We only day-tripped, but did walk around.

The memories were of a very pleasant (and not tourist-ruined) open central area and some reassuringly normal / humdrum suburbs. Certainly plenty of different sites to visit, but I'm not sure I'd put it with the same ambience as Lucca or the size of Siena.

I could see the appeal of a week there, which I think would be a very safe option, but I think I'd be kicking my heels at 3 weeks - but we're all different!

Ian: Thanks for the input. I'm a VERY slow traveler (limited mobility) and would be taking Italian lessons half days, so I should not get bored (I've spent a total of 6 weeks in Lucca and would not hesitate to return. The only reason I stopped going to Siena after a total of 4 weeks was the hills.).

Yes, I'd understand that! Ravenna very flat from recollection.
