We are now in our 80's and cannot travel our usual independent ways so considering river cruises. The Seine from Paris, including Normandy beaches, is of interest. Would appreciate comments from you if you've taken a river cruise like this. And suggestions about the best companies, including any European based.

I've not done the Seine but have done both the Rhine and Rhone. River Cruises are a lovely way to travel - very relaxing sitting on deck and watching the sceney pass, and with many interesting places to visit. The boats are also much smaller than the ocean cruise liners which is a definite bonus.

I used Titan Travel for the Rhine and Riviera Travel for the Rhone. I can recommend both, although Riviera probably have the edge... Both had a dedicated tour guide on board who accompanied excursions as well as talking about what to do and see.

Based on our experience on a Danube River cruise last year, I think that these cruises are actually just as physically demanding as any other type of group tour. When in port we either had to walk into town, or ride a bus to a location, then walk for several hours while doing a tour of the area. We always joked that we'd save the river cruises until we were older and couldn't get around as easily, but the reality wasn't quite what we were expecting. (Altho looking back, it seems foolish to have thought that!)

That being said, we've just booked a Seine River cruise with Gate1 for next spring. Before the cruise we'll begin in London, then take the chunnel to Paris - something I've always wanted to do! Best of luck with your plans!

River cruises are a great option, especially on the Seine from Paris to Normandy. It's a lovely way to see the sights without the hassle of independent travel.

I've heard good things about a few companies:

Viking River Cruises: Great service and detailed itineraries.
AmaWaterways: Luxurious and known for their food.
CroisiEurope: European-based, often more affordable.

Stay away from Viking. When things go well, they deliver. At the first sign of trouble, high/low water, strikes, etc., they put you on a bus, claim they are meeting the terms of the contract, and turn a deaf ear to any requests for information.
