Ryanair new hand baggage policy

Definitely potential for confusion and delays if they're doing that at the boarding gate, rather than using existing hold luggage process.

I'm not surprised they've done this, as people have been pushing their luck on cabin bags for a while, causing the scenario that they just don't all fit.

For us the news is (for now) good, as we stump up and pay for checked bags, and have a light rucksack each for carry on, that we put under the seat in front - for stuff we want on the flight, plus anything breakable / that might get crushed.

We effectively experienced this policy last week. We didn't find it troublesome. Bags are tagged as you enter security, and you then drop them with ground staff as you are boarding. So you don't need to queue first at the bag drop for checked luggage (which you do if you've pre-booked hold baggage). By the time we were through immigration in Manchester, the bags were on the carousel, in fact our bags appeared magically in front of us just as we arrived in the baggage hall!

We came back today, the first official day of the new policy. No hassle at all: the bags were tagged at the gate and handed over to ground staff just before getting on the plane. As usual, they were on the not-carousel at Carcassonne before we'd finished queueing at immigration (full plane, two staff). So frankly unless you are in a desperate hurry and you have booked seats near the door, I can't see the point of paying for priority boarding, or indeed for checking in cabin-sized bags (as opposed to oversize ones).

I assume the baggage handling still costs Ryanair something, but less than it would if bags were checked in; the passengers do the work of scanning the bags and getting them to the plane.
