Scotland with Kids - help please!

In addition to our plans to be in Italy for fall break, we are thinking about winter break (Christmas time and New Years) in Scotland. It is a perk of living in Geneva and having Easy Jet and their relatively low prices for airfare.....

Anyhow, Scotland! Edinburgh would be our base. Edinburgh castle, the Museum of Scotland, and the Story Telling Museum are on my list. Where else should we take our 6 and 8 year old ungrat lovely little daughters? This can include day trips by train.

What sort of things do the girls enjoy?

Make sure you are at Edinburgh Castle for the 1o'clock gun. There is also Palace of Holyroodhouse.
There is the Museum of Childhood and the Zoo. They might also enjoy the Camera Obscura and the World of Illusions. Then there is the ruined Craigmillar Castle and don't forget to go and find Greyfriars Bobby (and find out about the story).

There is a treasure trail you can follow round the Old town...

If you are wanting a day out, then St Andrew's is well worth a visit with its ruined castle and cathedral. Don't miss the bottle dungeon and mine and countermine in the castle... (either bus from Edinburgh or train to Leuchars and then bus).

There is also Roslyn Chapel, easily done by bus from Edinburgh.

Don't forget attractions will be shut over Christmas and also New Years Day and maybe 2nd January too.

If your girls enjoy Harry Potter, there’s the Elephant House Cafe in Edinburgh just off the Royal Mile. It’s where JK Rowling wrote some of her early HP books at a table overlooking the cemetery. It has been said that some of the surnames in her books came from tombstones there. Not sure if it’s true, but it could make for an interesting visit. Our lunch at the cafe was quite good. It is also quite close to the Greyfriars Bobby statue that Eleanor mentioned above.
