Trenitalia Regionale Tickets: Electronic or Paper Which is Better?

GAC

100+ Posts
Some people may have asked themselves the question whether it's better to purchase Trenitalia Regionale train tickets in electronic or paper form. Trenitalia regionale/regionale veloce trains are the UNRESERVED SEAT COMMUTER trains which comprise a significant part of Italy's rail network. As contrasted to the reserved fast trains (Freccia and Intercity), there are no advance purchase discounts with the regionale tickets, and hence almost no reason to buy them in advance. Indeed, buying in advance only raises the risk of a ticket forfeiture in the event one holds a PAPER ticket and needs to cancel the ticket at the last minute (or at any time, if the ticket costs less than 10.01 Euros). And when refunds are given for a PAPER ticket, they are only 80% of the face value of the ticket. (The refund rule is different for electronic tickets, see below).

Most regionale trains are not capacity-controlled, which means that they cannot sell out. (Some are capacity-controlled, which can be seen by using the Trenitalia APP, but these rarely sell out).

ELECTRONIC TICKETS FOR THE REGIONALE TRAINS

So getting back to the original question, is it better to buy these tickets electronically or in paper form? The answer is mixed: electronic tickets have the significant advantage that you can easily modify them (date and/or time of travel) and cancel them (within the midnight deadline the day beforehand) ONLINE. The modification rule merits attention: prior to midnight of the day beforehand, you can modify both the date and the time of travel. However starting at one minute past midnight on the day of travel, you can only modify the time of travel, which means that you can select a different train, but only on the day originally selected for travel. NO MODIFICATIONS ARE ALLOWED AFTER THE SCHEDULED DEPARTURE TIME OF THE ORIGINALLY SELECTED TRAIN.

Unless you make a timely modification of the electronic ticket, you MUST travel ONLY on the regionale train reflected in the electronic record, not on any other regionale train. There is one important EXCEPTION: if you MISS a CONNECTION from any Trenitalia train TO a Trenitalia regionale train not due to your own fault (e.g. the incoming train is running late and you miss the connection), you may board the NEXT DEPARTING REGIONALE TRAIN to your destination, without taking any additional action. Just board the next regionale train. However, if you miss your regionale train (holding an electronic ticket) because you arrived late at the train station, you forfeit the ticket.

IMPORTANT CHANGE TO REFUND RULE FOR ELECTRONIC TICKETS

Trenitalia has made an important change to its refund rules for regionale tickets issued in ELECTRONIC form: now, Trenitalia will refund the ENTIRE FACE AMOUNT** OF THE CANCELLED ELECTRONIC REGIONALE TICKET (without a 20% holdback), and even if the ticket costs less than 10.01 Euros, but ONLY if the passenger cancels online. This is yet a further advantage of the electronic ticket over the paper ticket.

**there are a few exceptions, and there are NO REFUNDS WHATSOEVER FOR UNUSED REGONALE TICKETS TO/FROM FIUMICINO AIRPORT (whether in paper or electronic form)

WHAT ABOUT PAPER TICKETS FOR THE REGIONALE TRAINS?

Now, the situation with a paper ticket is different: if you miss the train because you arrive late at the station, no problem: the PAPER ticket can be used on any regionale train departing within FOUR HOURS*** after the scheduled departure time of the regionale train reflected on the paper ticket. This also means that missing a train CONNECTION is no problem, as the paper ticket has a four-hour validity, and missing a connection can, when necessary, actually extend the validity time of the ticket. However, the big DISDVANTAGE of the paper ticket is that you cannot modify it, or seek a refund, on your own: you must bring it to a staffed ticket sales counter at the train station for this purpose. Staffed ticket sales counters are found only in the larger train station, so this limitation needs to be kept in mind if you hold a paper ticket. Also, with the very recent rule change for refunds or regionale tickets, you avoid the 20% holdback on refunded electronic regionale tickets, as explained above.

***there are some exceptions: e.g. tickets for the Fiumicino airport train are valid for only 90 minutes; tickets for travel within Liguria up to 50 kms. are valid for only 75 minutes.

I usually prefer to purchase regionale train tickets electronically via the Trenitalia APP (you could also use the Trenitalia website). I buy them on the day of travel itself, when I am 100% certain of taking the train. This protects me against the possibility of a sudden illness, injury, strike or labor dispute which cancels train service, bad weather which prompts me to change travel plans, or simply having a last-minute change of mind. Why fork out money sooner than necessary? (Bear in mind that ELECTRONIC regionale tickets are now fully refundable (with some exceptions), and without holdback or minimum ticket cost, as explained above).

(Beware: the English-language version does not contain up-to-date information about ticket refunds)

If you purchase a PAPER ticket for the Trenitalia regionale trains minutes prior to boarding the train, there are no advantages to having an ELECTRONIC ticket. Indeed, with a PAPER ticket, which is valid for 4 hours from the scheduled train departure time, you could (if you wish) break your journey mid-way to visit a town along the train route to your final destination, AS LONG AS YOU BOARD A SUBSEQUENT REGIONALE TRAIN to your final destination within the 4-hour ticket validity. This you cannot do with an ELECTRONIC ticket.

The situation is different if you purchase a PAPER ticket the day beforehand or even sooner. In that event, holding an ELECTRONIC ticket would give you the additional benefits which I explain in the original posting above.

For people without an internet connection, for whom ELECTRONIC tickets are not practical, buying PAPER tickets for the regionale trains on the day of travel itself makes perfect sense. That way you are protected in case something unexpected occurs after midnight of the day beforehand, which compels you (or which makes you want) to cancel the trip. After midnight of the day beforehand, the regionale train ticket becomes completely non-refundable (whether in paper or electronic form).

Remember to validate your PAPER ticket in the green validation machine at the rail station prior to boarding the regionale train (even though you should not be subject to any fine for failure to do so PROVIDED that the PAPER ticket reflects a specific regionale train departure time). Validating these PAPER tickets is still recommended because the Trenitalia official tariff rules still specify this, although in practice fines are given only for unvalidated "open" PAPER regionale train tickets (those which do not specify a specific train). This distinction is offered by Trenitalia ticket agents, but does not form a part of the official tariff rules.

I think I used the TrenItalia app for Torino to Milano in 2024.

It was advance purchase so I don't know if that saved money.

But IIRC, I purchased with Apple Pay through the app so didn't have to store my credit card on my TrenItalia account.

I also liked that I could show the QR code, didn't have to validate a paper ticket.

From Milan I took a short train to Lugano and used the TreNord app, which does require you to use a real credit card number, IIRC.

The best transport app which I've used is SBB in Switzerland. You can purchase by Apple Pay and again you get the electronic tickets instantly.

You can search not just trains but buses, ferries. I think it even showed gondola and cable car t times as well as fares.

The real-time aspect of it was terrific, I bought a ticket a couple of times just minutes before the train arrived and departed from some stations. So once or twice I chose where to go based on when the next train was arriving.

Four more observations:

1. You do NOT have to store your credit card information on the Trenitalia APP. You can store the names and birthdates of all travelers in your travel party. That way, when you return to the APP to buy more tickets in the future, the fields are already populated with your name and birthdate, and the buying process is quicker (especially if there are several people in your travel party). You only need to add the credit card info.

2. You can buy an electronic ticket online via the Trenitalia website or APP up to 5 minutes prior to scheduled train departure.

3. If buying PAPER tickets from an electronic ticket machine shortly prior to the departure time of your desired train, be sure to arrive at the station several minutes sooner, as there could be lines of people using the machines. Many small stations have only ONE machine. Medium stations often have 2-6, while the larger stations can have up to 100 (Roma Termini and Milano Centrale come to mind).

4. The staffed ticket sales counters, open only in the large and in selected medium-sized stations, often have lines which can be long during parts of the day. This is almost always the slowest method to buy a ticket. The Trenitalia website gives the presence and opening hours of these staffed ticket sales counters, but you must search region by region. Here is a listing for Tuscany:

2. is certainly something that could benefit travellers on their arrival day into Italy. e.g. buying the ticket on the shuttle bus on the way from airport to train station, helping mitigate the risk of a flight delay.

For 4. We used to forget that many small stations no longer have a ticket office, don't always have a ticket machine, and even if they do, they often seemed to be out of order. We never did work out whether local tabaccherie handled ticket sales like they do for buses/coaches/ferries. Instead I'd walk down the train to find the conductor & buy the ticket from them. Again 2. will be a big help.
