Use of AI

AI generated itineraries are probably very useful when planning a city break or trip round a museum.

However I would add a word of caution when using them to plan a complete holiday. I frequent other forums like Trip Adviser and Rick Steves. Often someone posts this detailed and 'wonderful' itinerary which is obviously been generated by AI and asking for advice on it (obvioulsy expecting posters to be bowled over by how wonderful it looks...)

In many cases, we aren't. The itineraries may look wonderful but logistically are often unrealistic and even unworkable in the amount they cram in.

Like everything you need to do your own research and check what is suggested.

Look at travel times for each day, not forgetting to add in time to find somewhere to park and then reach the attraction. Check opening times and particulay last time to buy tickets. Think about how long you may want to spend in each place. Don't forget to add in time for meals and comfort breaks too.

Now compare it with what the AI itinerary is suggesting for that day. You may well find that what is suggested for a single day realistically a lot longer than that, if you try and cover everything suggested...

Use the AI itinerary for ideas, but still do your own research and tweek it to fit your expectations.

If the objective is to draft an itinerary of the most popular tourist sites in a location, borrowing from organised coach tours, mainstream travel guides and those that have already manually borrowed from such expertise... then yes I daresay it could get people a draft. For a box ticking holiday, where people can tick off the most famous sites, to say they've been there and 'done it', it could save time.

Me? I'd throw that draft in the bin. My plans steer clear of mass tourism, but these would not just lean into it, but possibly even reinforce it.

AI has use where base data is reliable and relevant.

Has anyone use AI in trip planning? My daughter used AI for touring museums this summer in Paris with great success.
yes , give prompt to chatgpt and mention as much info as you can, it will plan the full iteneray for you. I always do it, and there are so many possibilities, it saves hell of time tbh.

Hi I find it can be really helpful to get you started but you need very specific prompts and need to keep asking it to refine things, then I head off and do the fun planning on my own. It can actually be fun (maybe I need more hobbies!!) and interesting to see what it comes up with. Its first answer is often the expected; a prompt that has worked for me is then to ask it for the 3 more alternatives for each place it suggests. One that is less expensive, one that is less touristy, and one that is a complete wildcard way out there. If you have been to a region a lot then I don't think this is useful yet but for regions where you may have only hit the major centres or haven't been lucky enough to travel to it seems to be a decent kicking off point.
