What’s your favorite travel movie that makes you want to pack a bag?

Every time I watch a good travel movie I suddenly want to book a flight somewhere. For me films like Under the Tuscan Sun or The Secret Life of Walter Mitty always trigger that feeling.

I like this thread. I have to think a bit. "The Way" is great for northern Spain, "Out of Africa", "Amélie", oh, these are so old! I'll be checking back to see what gets recommended.

Its not a movie but we are addicted to the old British archeology show Time Team. Kinda funny since we always go to Italy but seem to sneak in a week or so in the UK on the way.

Every time I watch a good travel movie I suddenly want to book a flight somewhere. Under the Tuscan Sun and The Secret Life of Walter Mitty always do that to me, they make even an ordinary weekend feel like it should turn into a trip. Funny how strong that pull can be. I get a similar thing with themed games too, where the setting does half the work. Then I remember flights cost actual money and settle for watching another movie.

Walter Mitty does that to me too. It is not even one specific destination, the whole movie just makes staying home suddenly feel like the boring option.


I think the best travel films are the ones where the location feels like part of the story rather than just a pretty background. You finish watching and immediately start looking up flights, hotels and places you had never seriously considered visiting before.


Under the Tuscan Sun definitely has that effect as well. Tuscany looks almost unfairly inviting in that movie.

However, I won't tell you my age, but I loved this movie when it came out in 1969, and still do!

Paris Can Wait, another Diane Lane movie, has beautiful scenery and captures the pride that French people have for their heritage.
