The Lizard

The Lizard is the most southerly point on the United Kingdom mainland (49°57' N). This dramatic coastline has steep granite cliffs, small fishing villages and sandy beaches. It is a popular summer holidays destination. The Helford River snakes through the countryside here. The South Coast National Trail goes along this coast. A popular, and easy, walk is from the Lizard Point to Kynance Beach (2.5 miles).

More Information

This part of Cornwall is less overrun in summer, has interesting historic villages, good swimming and good walking on the coast path. Be prepared for driving on narrow lanes. The village of Helford on the Helford River is charming. I liked Coverack and Cadgwith on the east coast of the Lizard, and Mullion on the west coast. Church Cove at Gunwalloe was my favorite beach for swimming. The local shop at Mawgan is excellent.

We spent a week on the Lizard in summer 2013 and loved the area.
