Modern
The Modern period starts with the Renaissance and the Age of Discovery and continues to the Industrial Era and the present.
Renaissance
The Renaissance was a cultural movement that spanned the period roughly from the 14th to the 17th century, beginning in Italy in the Late Middle Ages and later spreading to the rest of Europe.
Medieval
The Middle Ages (Medieval) lasted from the collapse of the Western Roman Empire in the 5th century until the Renaissance and Age of Discovery in the 15th century.
Ancient Byzantine
The Byzantine Empire started when the Roman Empire was split into east and west and Byzanitium (Constantinople) was made the capital of the eastern half. They embraced Christianity and spoke Greek. They controlled much of the Mediterranean coast in Italy in the 6th and 7th centuries.
Ancient Roman
Ancient Roman civilization started in the 8th century BC and spread from the Italian Peninsula into much of Europe until it ruled 20% of the world's population during its height between the first and second centuries AD.
Ancient Greek
The Greeks spread out through the Mediterranean starting in the 8th century BC.
Ancient Etruscan
The Etruscans lived in Lazio and Tuscany before the Romans.
Prehistoric
The Prehistoric time in Europe was before written history started and includes the Stone Age (Paleolithic, Neolithic), Bronze Age and Iron Age.

Interesting collections of historic or artistic significance.
