Bikes

Don't know about rentals, but I looked at packing a bike for a trip (Iceland) and backed off from doing it due to logistics unrelated to just the bike (lodging, other companions, etc.). You can pack anything for a flight if you are willing to incur the expense and the potential for damage. I am assuming "on" does not mean "carry on". When I was looking into it, I heard from both "put it in a cardboard box" and "just wrap it in plastic". The box people were convinced that the container could be made more resistant to damage. The plastic people were convinced that the bike would get gentler treatment from handlers. Non-cardboard containers just added to the issues of weight (cost) and how to handle once on site. I leaned towards the box people, but then the next question became how to get the bike repacked for the trip home -- do you find somewhere to store the original materials or trust in the ability to find new? I would suggest that you contact bicycle clubs (both US and Italy) who could give you more specific advice.

No experience myself. I'd rent in Italy if I had to, bike culture is very developed of course.

We’ve done it all and would recommend renting over there. High end bike shops often have high end bikes to rent. My husband brings his own pedals. Used to be easy to bring your bike over but not worth the hassle and expense. Pay attention to the bike clothes you bring, they pay attention to those details . Often renting will allow you to chat with the local riders and they’ll invite you to ride with them. highly Recommend it!
