In September my wife and I will live in Bergamo for a month. Our longish stay in Northern Italy will be sort of new to us. So I will use and abuse this terrific forum for advice and tips. At the moment my question is this: How to apply for a free Carta d'Argento (we are both over 75) from the States?

Undoubtedly the easiest thing is to buy it from the railway station when you arrive. In theory you can buy it online, according to what it says on the Trenitalia website. Pity that after looking for 20 minutes I haven't found where ! I will ask tomorrow morning when the chat opens in Italian. In the meantime I found this, I don't know if anywhere is convenient to you:
