Description: 2 bedrooms/2 bathrooms renovated barn beside owner's house (Sweetbriar Farm) on a lane outside a village, near Bridport
Link: https://www.dream-cottages.co.uk/property-details/?id=SWEET_DR
Location: Dorset, Uploders, near Bridport
Date of Stay: March 2015

We had a short break of 4 nights (Monday to Friday) at this cottage in mid-March. It is a newly renovated barn beside the owner's house in a rural area, on a lane near the village of Uploaders, just 2 miles from Bridport. The house is near the A35 main east west road in this area, so it is very easy to get places. You do not notice the road when at the cottage - it is 1/4 mile away and you do not hear it. The lanes in this area can be very narrow, so it is nice to be near the main road.

The farm is not a working farm but is in a farming area. It is located in a shallow valley, with hillsides shaped by medieval Strip Lynchets (looks like terrace farming). There were sheep on the hills when we were there. We walked along the lane to Uploaders (they have a pub but no shops). You can easily drive to the beach at Burton Bradstock (go to Hive Beach just past the village) - about 10 minutes drive on lanes. And you are only 5 miles from Bridport.

The cottage is very private and the owners, Nigel and Chris, are there if you need them, but you don't really notice them. The cottage has its own outside area with a table and chairs and loungers. Inside it is very nice with a main area of living room, kitchen and dining room (wood floors and high ceilings). The twin bedroom and full bathroom are downstairs with the master bedroom and full bathroom above in a kind of mezzanine. There is a screen you can put up for privacy in the master bedroom if you are staying with other people.

The bed is a very comfortable double, the sofas comfortable and the kitchen is very good. It was a high quality renovation. The heating system is good and they have a nice gas fireplace too.

I highly recommend this cottage. It is popular, so book early. The same owners have Home Cot in Bothenhampton on the edge of Bridport. We drove by this cottage and the location is good. From the photos it looks like the owners have renovated it to a similar good standard as Sweetbriart.

Dorset in March

March is not prime season for the Dorset Coast but we were very lucky with the weather and had a lot of sun. The temps were in the low 50s. We walked parts of the South Coast Trail. There are many footpaths in this area. See my trip report posts for more info on this area.

Bridport

Bridport is a lovely town, population 13,000. There are several parking lots so it is easy to drop in. They have a good selection of coffee shops, restaurants and other shops. There is a Waitrose on the main street and a large Morrisons south of town, plus a butcher and a vegetable shop on the main street. West Bay is the beach town, a mile south. There are many places to access the beach along this coast.

We are staying in Sweet Briar now for 10 days. I won't go into details as Pauline has already done that but I will add. It is simply the loveliest cottage and we feel very lucky to have the opportunity to stay here. It has everything you could possibly want. Very tastefully designed and furnished. Grab it if you are in the area and it is available.
