Interested in Long Term (up to 6 months) House Share in Italy

Hello! I am new here! I am looking for recommendations on how to find rooms to let/house shares in Italy? I am a young "senior" American woman and I am interested in living in Italy for up to 6 months. I am open to consider a variety of areas. Any suggestions greatly appreciated! Thank you!

Hi, Lizajean. A few questions to help us respond to your request.

First, do you have a European passport that will not limit your stay to 90 days out of 180 in the Schengen countries combined. If not, I hope that you will be applying for a visa to allow you to stay longer than 89 nights legally.

Second, budget?

Third, interest?

Fourth, specific requirements?

I was talking with other slow travelers over lunch the other day and they said that a washing machine is more important to have than a kitchen. For me, both are equally important and would not rent a place without both. A dryer is not a necessity as long as there is a drying rack or some kind of clothes line.

Hello! Thank you for writing! This idea is VERY much in its infancy! Firstly, I do not have a European passport. I have a US and Australian Passport, but I don't think either will help here :) My general idea is to take a year or 2 and live in a few different countries, staying in each for 3-6 months. It sounds like that may not be an option? I have a living budget of $2,500 USD/month, at least that is what I would like to stick with. My interests are cooking, food, gardens and history/architecture. I have family in the south of France so I would like to spend time there. Any ideas/suggestions/reality checks are appreciated! Thank you.

Salve, Lizajean! Never mind "reality checks" if you really want to do it. I may get a lot of flack for saying that but start with the dream and things will fall in place. Oh right, the passport thing: I'm sure you can figure that out. And maybe you can only stay for 89 nights, then come back at a later time for another 89 nights. If you speak with 25 different ST people on this site you will get 25 different recommendations for where to stay. Maybe you need to do a bit of research and heart search to figure out your most desirable environment, first. We will all be most helpful once you state some specifics. But it sounds doable to me with your budget and your desire! Keep us informed.

As Cheryl said, let the dream guide you. We did, and have been living here now for ten years!

To narrow it down, close your eyes and picture what it is you're dreaming of...countryside, city, smaller art city, village...and let it develop from there. You could find house sits or rentals based on your ideal vision and interests, and your budget makes it totally doable. You can decide on a more specific plan of action later, but let it forment and that will help you plan.

There is the pesky visa thing but that can be worked around, too by combining countries that are outside the Schengen (Croatia, Ireland, UK for example).

You should check into weather or not your Australian passport might be more helpful than your U.S. one. They have special agreements with EU countries. It may make the Schengen thing irrelevant.

Thank you all for your wonderfully positive and optimistic ideas!! I'm inspired and will further develop this idea! Italy has just been in my heart forever!! I even owned an Italian restaurant in Australia for many years and have always dreamed of a life there! It's never too late, right!?!
