It is HOT in Rome!

Pauline

I had a message from @Wendy&Rob saying how hot it is in Rome! The temps have been over 90F for days. Any advice for dealing with such hot weather in a big city?

We were in Orvieto and then Montepulciano this time last year and it was 90F the two days we were in Orvieto. Luckily our hotel had A/C. We went out in the morning, had lunch out, then rested in the hottest part of the afternoon before going out again in the evening. By the time we were in Montepulciano it was much cooler and we had some thunder storms.

It looks like it is cooling off a little bit on Monday.

I agree - embrace the after-lunch nap in the cool of your hotel room, and that will give you the energy to stay up a bit later into the evening/night, when the temperatures have sunk a bit.

The other thing I would normally suggest is museums, galleries, churches - all nice oases of coolth in the heat of the day. But, reading Pauline's other post about the strong dollar/weak euro's impact on visitor numbers, this might not be the best advice for a big city like Rome!

We spent our last night near Rome airport and while warm did not seem particularly so. It cooled off in the evening. Same near Montepulciano. Quite cool and windy most evenings. Warm during the day. I think we saw 28C which is 82F. Not too bad. If in 90s I would have been dying!! Pool still pretty cool.

The HEAT in Rome this year has been a real challenge for me. I've been melting... And have really low energy. We're having August temperatures in May and June. I'm an early bird, which works well - cooler and less people to deal with. I've been spending the mornings walking/exploring - keeping to the shade and yes, stepping into churches, which become a sanctuary, in more ways than than one. They provide shelter from the heat and you can sit and relax a bit. By early afternoon, I'm "home" for a second shower and relaxing with the AC on. The good news is the laundry dries quickly. The bad news is I've been sweating so much, I have to do more laundry;)

I too spent the last 3 weeks in Italy. Went out walking in the mornings. Stayed in room with a/c afternoon and out in evenings. As, Heidi says it drains the energy right out of you. we had 32C a few days with high humidity.
