In 2019 Italy will stop producing 1 and 2 cent coins and merchants will be allowed to round total purchases to the nearest .05.
I have generally found the 1 and 2 cent coins useless and most small businesses I deal with have always rounded down their prices to avoid these and the 5 cent coins. Use of the copper covered coins has been most prevalent in national chains.
Next time I'm at the Trevi fountain I can unload my stash of these coins
