Milan and Padova Transport and Lodging

I am thinking about the last week of September, flying into MXP, spending a couple of nights on Lago Maggiore, and then heading towards Venice for the Biennale. I don't want to stay in Venice. however.

I am thinking of basing in Padova and go into Venice for the art, as well as a day trip to Vicenza.

A few things I am stil trying to figure out:
-- Should I rent a car at the airport or train station? (driving to Maggiore but want to train the rest of the time)
-- Where else might I do a day trip?
-- Hotel or apts recs in Padova?
-- Flying back to LA, does it make more sense to go from Venice of Milan? (I'm thinking Venice...)

Grazie per l'aiuto!

If you’re going to the Biennale, consider staying nearby for at least one night rather than transitting back and forth on the train and vaporetto. When visiting the Biennale, I stay at a guesthouse with breakfast and with supermarket and restaurants at the end of the street. It is five minutes from Giardino and ten from Arsenale.
Padova for the rest of your trip - Treviso is not far and is an interesting city with some very good late medieval frescoes.
