TV Series Mr Bates vs The Post Office

Mr Bates vs The Post Office on ITV in the UK is an excellent drama about a national scandal that has been going on for 20 years. The Horizon computer system introduced into post offices throughout the country in the early 2000s caused errors that made it look like postmasters were stealing. Many had to pay large amounts of money to the Post Office for these “loses”, some were put in jail, most were fired.

The Post Office is the heart of many communities here. They way the postmasters were treated by the Post Office officials is a scandel. They are still working out compensation and overturning these cases still. This show has forced the government to deal with it faster.

Plus, it is a very moving drama and a good look at British life.

We really enjoyed this show, very well done and shocking. Amazing how many people have seen and the impact it is having on the politicians and public opinion.

This is the best drama on a very factual event in 1996. To heighten the drama, some identities have been changed and scenes have been added, but what really works here is how well it succeeds in telling the human cost to those who have been falsely accused of crimes that never happened.

From Wikipedia: Between 1999 and 2015, over 900 subpostmasters were convicted of theft, fraud and false accounting based on faulty Horizon data, with about 700 of these prosecutions carried out by the Post Office.
