The city of Pozzuoli, unofficial capital of the Phlegrean Fields west of Naples and home to a number of fantastic archeological sites (Flavian amphitheater, Temple of Serapis, Archeological zone of Rione Mare) as well as gateway to yet more nearby magnificent sites (Cumae archeological site, Baiae archeological park, National Archeological Museum in the Aragonese Castle at Baiae, and the one-of-a-kind Piscina Mirabilis in Bacoli) is CONNECTED TO NAPLES by two rail lines and one bus line, making it extremely easy to visit the city as a daytrip. Here are the three transportattion options, in order of usefulness for most foreign tourists:

1. Trenitalia Metropolitano train from Piazza Garibaldi to Pozzuoli Solfatara station (f.k.a Pozzuoli Ferrovie dello Stato, aka Pozzuoli Metro): departures roughly every 15 minutes from underneath Napoli Centrale (easy connections from the rest of Italy); travel time 40 minutes, one-way fare 2.60 Euros. This train operates underground in the City of Naples (as metro line 2), and you can board or alight from the train at the following stations in Naples: Cavour (National Archeological Museum), Montesanto, Piazza Amedeo, Mergellina and Piazza Leopardi. Trains run from around 6:30 a.m. to nearly 22:00 (fewer on weekends).

Schedules are on http://www.trenitalia.com

2. EAV bus line 101 "Monte di Procida" from the Circumvesuviana Porta Nolana terminus on Corso Garibaldi (750 meters from Napoli Centrale), making several stops in Pozzuoli, the most convenient of which are along Via Solfatara at the intersection of the short path to the Pozzuoli Solfatara Metro station; and nearly at the front gate of the Flavian Amphitheater along Via Terracciano (SW corner of monument). Travel time roughly 35-50 minutes and one-way fare: Unico Campania NA2 Corsa Semplice Aziendale 2.60 Euros. On the schedules, see arrival times for "Via Solfatara Staz. Metro". The immediately next stop is practically at the front gate of the Flavian Amphitheatre. A full list of stops is also listed in the hyperlinked schedules. You can also board and alight from this bus at several stops within Naples, the full list is shown on the schedules. Buses run from 5:00 a.m. to midnight.

3. EAV Cumana Railway from the CUMANA Montesanto station in Naples to the Pozzuoli CUMANA station. DO NOT CONFUSE the CUMANA Montesanto station with the Naples METRO Line 2 Montesanto station (Trenitalia Metropolitano train to Pozzuoli): they are about 200 meters apart! Travel time roughly 30 minutes and one-way fare: Unico Campania NA2 Corsa Semplice Aziendale 2.60 Euros. Trains run every 20 minutes from 5:21 a.m. to 21:41. DO NOT CONFUSE the CUMANA line with the Circumflegrea line (to Licola) which operates from different tracks of the same origination station in Naples. Effective April 21, 2024 there is a NEW CUMANA LINE STATION IN POZZUOLI, located along Via Nicola Fasano in a semi-industrial area, roughly 550 meters due west of the now abandoned station closer to the Port. This new station is roughly 800 meters from the Flavian Amphitheater.

Distance to the front gate of the Flavian Amphitheatre:

From the Napoli Solfatara Metro Station (Trenitalia): 600 meters

From the bus stop of bus 101 "Monte di Procida": practically in front of the gate

From the NEW Cumana Line rail station along Via Fasano: 800 meters

(All distances as measured by Google Maps)

ALLOW AT LEAST HALF A DAY for a most worthwhile daytrip from Naples to Pozzuoli

Curiosity: Actress Sophia Loren and her sister Maria Scicolone grew up in Pozzuoli. Maria married the youngest son of Il Duce and their daughter Alessandra Mussolini is a well-known Italian politician.

Need to get to Pozzuoli from the Naples Airport?

Take the Alibus airport bus to the stop in front of Napoli Centrale train station, then take the Trenitalia Metropolitano train from the underground Piazza Garibaldi station to the Pozzuoli Solfatara metro station. This is also known as Metro Line 2.

What if you're arriving at Napoli Centrale train station?

Walk downstairs to the Piazza Garibaldi Metro Line 2 station and take a Trenitalia Metropolitano train to the Pozzuoli Solfatara metro station.

What if you're arriving at the Mergellina boat dock?

Walk to the bus stop of the Bus Line 101 "Monte di Procida" at Via Giordano Bruno 199 (adjacent to Piazza Sannazaro) and get off in Pozzuoli at the Flavia Amphitheater. Alternatively, walk to the Napoli Mergellina train station (Trenitalia) and take the Metropolitano train noted above to Pozzuoli.

What if you're arriving at the Beverello boat dock?

Walk to the bus stop of the Bus line 101 "Monte di Procida" along via Acton (beneath the Maschio Angioino) and get off in Pozzuoli at the Flavian Amphitheater.

What if you're arriving at the Porta di Massa ship dock or the historic Stazione Marittima?

Walk to the bus stop of the Bus line 101 "Monte di Procida" along Via de Gasperi in front of the Caserma Zanzur (Guardia di Finanza) building. Alternatively, board this bus along Via Marina near the intersection with Via Duomo. Get off in Pozzuoli at the Flavian Amphitheater.

NOTE: look for the "EAV" sign at the bus stop when waiting for EAV bus line 101.

Just to be perfectly clear, the EAV Bus Line 101 from Naples stops within 100 meters of the Pozzuoli Solfatara Metro Station and not in front of it: the bus stop is along Via Solfatara (main road) and PRECISELY UNDERNEATH THE RAIL OVERPASS (the return bus to Naples stops across the street). At this point, the bus is traveling downhill, in the direction central Pozzuoli and the Flavian Amphitheater. You can see the bus stop from the street photos on Google Maps.

The VERY NEXT STOP is at the front gates of the amphiteater. The bus skirts the east side of the monument and turns right along Corso Terracciano, looping around the south side of the amphiteater. It proceeds in a westward direction and stops nearly in front of the main entrance gate (southwest side of the monument). The return bus to Naples stops across the street. You can see the bus stop from the street photos on Google Maps.

The distance between the first and second bus stops is approximately 500 meters.

In other words, EAV Bus line 101 will take you efficiently from the Porta Nolana station in central Naples to the front gate of the Flavian Amphitheater in Pozzuoli.
