SELF-ISOLATION RULES FOR PERSONS WHO TEST POSITIVE TO COVID-19 WHILE IN ITALY, or who have NOT tested positive AND are asymptomatic, BUT have had a "close contact" with someone who does test positive:

This article explains the GENERAL rules. Bear in mind that the rules might be a little different from region to region of Italy:

IF YOU ARE POSITIVE AND SYMPTOMATIC:

Minimum of 10 days of self-isolation from the date when symptoms first occurred (either in your lodging of choice or in a Covid hotel). You must test negative at the conclusion of the isolation period (and you may test only on or after the fourth day after you have become asymptomatic), otherwise you continue in isolation for UP TO 21 DAYS OR until you finally test negative, whichever first occurs. You are released after 21 days as long as you have been asymptomatic for the last 7 days.

IF YOU ARE POSITIVE AND ASYMPTOMATIC AT ALL TIMES:

Alternative 1: If you have received the third jab of vaccine OR have received the second jab in the previous 120 days, you must self-isolate for 7 days from the date when you tested positive, then test negative.

Alternative 2: If you are unvaccinated, have received only the first jab, OR have received the second jab more than 120 day previously, you must self-isolate for 10 days from the date when you tested positive, then test negative.

In EITHER case, if you continue to test positive, you must continue to self-isolate for UP TO 21 DAYS OR until you finally test negative, whichever first occurs.

THERE ARE SEPARATE RULES FOR PERSONS WHO DO NOT TEST POSITIVE, ARE ASYMPTOMATIC, BUT HAVE HAD A "CLOSE CONTACT" WITH SOMEONE ELSE WHO HAS TESTED POSITIVE:

1. If you have received the third jab of vaccine, or have received the second jab (or have recovered from the virus) within the previous 120 days, there is no obligation to self-isolate, but you must self-monitor for 10 days from when you have had the "close contact" AND wear an FFP2 face mask (N-95; KN-95) for those 10 days when in public. If you develop symptoms, you must immediately get tested.

2. If you have NOT received the third jab of vaccine but have received the second jab (or have recovered from the virus) more than 120 days beforehand, you must self-isolate for 5 days from when you had the "close contact", then test negative.

3. If you are unvaccinated, have received only the first dose, or have received the second dose fewer than 14 days beforehand, you must self-isolate for 10 days from when you had the "close contact", then test negative.

What is considered a "close contact":

1. A person who tests positive who lives with you;

2. A person who tests positive with whom you have had physical contact (e.g. handshake, embrace, kiss);

3. A person who tests positive with whom you have been in close proximity (less than 2 meters) for at least 15 minutes, where neither person wore a face mask;

4. A person who tests positive with whom you have been in a closed space, where neither person wore a face mask;

5 A person who tests positive seated within two seats of you (in any direction) on an airplane, train, bus or ship.

You are ordinarily allowed to spend your period of self-isolation in a lodging of your choice (hotel, B&B, apartment, house, villa, etc.). Otherwise, you will be sent to a "Covid hotel" (at your expense, there is a daily flat rate for meals and lodging). Be sure to ask the management or proprietors of the hotel or B&B where you are registered if they will ALLOW you to stay on notwithstanding having tested positive. Some lodgings do not lend themselves to accommodating Covid patients (due to their physical layout), and some proprietors strongly prefer not to host Covid patients.

If you need to take a negative Covid test in order to return to your home country, I recommend getting the test done BEFORE you check out of your hotel of B&B, just in case you do test positive and need to extend your stay (assuming availability of the lodging and the willingness of the proprietor to let you stay on).
