Stopping point between Rome and Vieste

We are planning on driving between Rome and Vieste. We will either do this as a longer day trip or stop for an overnight along the way. Puglia is the primary focus of our trip but any advice about a town not to miss along the autostrada (about half wayish)that might make for a nice overnight stay, is much appreciated. We were thinking of just driving via the A25/E80 as it is given as the fastest but are open to suggestions re a better more scenic route and stopping spot. Many thanks.

In this thread @Valerie recommends Sulmona as a good town. I have read about it too.

In that area, I'd recommend Sulmona as a homebase. It's a really lovely town and has some nice B&Bs and inns, good restaurants and good connections. A little closer to Salle is Caramanico Terme, also cute, we stayed at an agriturismo there once that I'd have to look up; but it might be a bit too off the main roads for seeing Abruzzo. Pescara is pretty - well, bland. Not much charm. Better to go uphill or inland, in my opinion.

The A25 is a nice drive thru the mountains. Sulmona is a great town with good food and always some confetti to taste.

If you want to be a little farther on the way to Puglia we also enjoy Lanciano along the coast. Interesting center and sits above the coast.
