Amalfi Coast - Praiano - Villano Blu from Summer in Italy

Villano Blu
2 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms
May 2019

We had a wonderful week at Villino Blu in Praiano. The house is comfortable and well equipped. The terraces are large and the view is outstanding. The location is good, just a few minutes walk to a good grocery shop, cafe, restaurants and 15 minutes on footpaths and small roads to the main part of town on the Coast Road (cafe, restaurants, more shops, church).

The agency, Summer in Italy, were very good to work with. They helped me decide which place to rent and the rental process went smoothly.

The house is on a small lane off the one-way main road that goes through Praiano, just before it reaches the Coast Road. The town cemetary is at the end of the lane. You do not hear any noise from the Coast Road, or the Praiano Road.

The house is built into the hill so that you park above it then walk down a few stairs (8 maybe) to the upper level. There is a large terrace with a table and chairs and great views. The main door into the house takes you to the living room, dining room and kitchen (all one room), with a bathroom. My only complaint about the house is that this area is not large. It is really a kitchen and dining area with a sofa to make it also the living room. But, this is typical in many Italian rentals and the huge terrace is where you spend a lot of time.

Downstairs are the two good sized bedrooms (one with a double, the other two twins), bathroom, laundry room. This level also has a terrace that is even larger than the one above. There are loungers on this terrace.

The owners live on the level below the house. They have a large terrace too. We met them but hardly noticed them during our stay.

We were very comfortable in this house. One thing to note is that because it is on the eastern side of Praiano, it loses the sun before sunset. This is also true for most of Positano. The western side of Praiano stays in the sun for longer.

The woman who checked us in told us to walk along the Coast Road to quickly get to the central part of Praiano, but instead you can walk to the end of the lane, then uphill (gentle) past the cemetary and into a neighborhood, then to the Praiano road. From there it is a short downhill to the center. We liked the cafe down there on the coast road. There is a food shop there, but the one near the house was very good and convenient.

We enjoyed the hiking from Praiano. There are three trails that take you up the mountain to the Path of the Gods. The western most trail, that goes by San Domenico, is very steep on the last part. The other two trails are easier. Once on the Path of the Gods you can walk to Bomerano and take the bus back, or walk to Nocelle or Positano and take the bus back, or walk back down another trail to Praiano. We loved the trail from Praiano to the Grotte di Santa Barbara below Bomerano.

Read my trip report for more photos and details on the hiking.

Updated to add that it was just me and Steve most of the time but we had two other friends join us for a few nights and it worked well for two couples. Not perfect because one bathroom is upstairs and both bedrooms are downstairs, but the "guest" bedroom has a door to the terrace so that is a nice benefit. And both bedrooms are bright and a good size.
