YouTube American Viscountess videos

I recently discovered a series of YouTube videos by Julie Montegu, an American who married into the family who owns Mapperton, a fabulous estate in Dorset not far from where I live. We’ve visited their gardens a few times. The movie “Far from the Madding Crowd” was filmed there a few years ago.

The estate has been in this family’s hands since the 1950s but the estate was built in the 16th century. The current owners, her in-laws, are the Earl and Countess of Sandwich, the family the “sandwich” was named for in the 1700s (also the Sandwich Islands). Julie and her husband Luke recently took over running Mapperton.

Her video series is about Mapperton and other grand estates in the UK. I am working my way through them.

Julie also has a YouTube series about buying a house in Italy. She recently purchased a small house in north western Tuscany for about €100,000, not a huge estate but a house in a small town.

I have been following her for some time now...very interesting. I follow Julie, Mapperton Estate (glorious gardens and grounds), and her Italy home sites. The renovation of her home in Fivizzano has been so much fun to watch.

I just watched two episodes about my local area! She has lunch at The Anchor in Seatown, my favourite place for a pub lunch, not far from Bridport.

In the second one she takes us on a tour of Beaminster, a very cute town about 5 miles from us. I learned a few things in that one.

It is nice to see my local area in these videos!

I have watched a couple of them.
My favourite one was of her swimming in the ancient outdoor pool at Mapperton.

I liked that one too. I’ve seen those pools but never imagined anyone swimming in them! There is a small pool in the Rococo Gardens in Painswick in the Cotswolds that I love and always imagined walking into.

I watched the Julie’s Diary part 2 where they talk about opening Mapperton after the lockdowns. Here is the Guinness Cake recipe.

I loved her tour of the town. I wonder if she found all the "letters" for the contest. What fun!

I just watched this one of the Tudor part of Mapperton House. We’ve not toured the house, just the gardens. The house isn’t always open. Up in the Cotswolds we toured Owlpen where the owners live and open it up to the public a couple of days a week. That was interesting. The people showing the house said the owners hang out in the kitchen when the house is open!

I think this was one long take! She is the perfect ambassador for the English aristocracy I think, because she is new to it, excited by it and so down to earth.

Beaminster is a very small town. Really just the main road through the town (about 6 blocks) and a couple of parallel streets. You can walk around it in 10 minutes. But she pointed out a place that I didn’t know - the flower shop. I always avoid flower shops because I figure the flowers are covered in pesticides and flown in from Africa, but now I know this one sells local flowers. I’ll be visiting soon!

Interesting info on Wikipedia about her.

From Wikipedia:
When Luke Montagu suffered years of side effects from being removed from prescription medication by an addiction clinic (and was later awarded £1.35 million in compensation), Julie Montagu began running yoga classes in nearby church halls in order to bring some money into the household. By that time, Luke was unable to continue in his position as director of the Met Film School so Julie became the sole supporter.

According to a June 2020 magazine article, Julie Montagu is a "qualified yoga teacher, nutritionist and mindfulness guru".
