We are planning a week long stay in Bath for early March 2017. It will be our first visit there and the vacation break will follow a week in London on business. We would like to rent a place in town to avoid having to rent a car and then use the trains for any day trips we might take. Just beginning to plan now so any and all recommendations on apartment rentals, day trip, sites, restaurants and more will be greatly appreciated. We are thinking a Saturday to Friday rental and then on to Heathrow for the trip home. Many thanks in advance!

There will be a lot to choose from for vacation rentals in Bath. There are several local agencies that represent apartments. I have a list here - Slow Europe Vacation Rentals in Bath.

We spent a week in Bath many years ago and rented an apartment on St Catherine's Square from Rural Retreats. It was a very nice apartment and a good location between the Royal Crescent and The Circus. That is a good area to stay, just out of the busy center. When you find some interesting looking apartments, post links to them and we can give you opinions on the locations (if you like).

Driving and parking in Bath are notorious, so you will do better without a car.

When taking the train from Bath to Heathrow, one option is to take the train to Reading and then take the RailAir bus to Heathrow. This doesn't always show up as an option when searching on www.thetrainline.com . They like to take you into London and then out from London to the airport.

I have some information about Bath here - Cotswolder - Bath.

That is a good suggestion @Andrew . We have not used the National Express buses, but they are very popular here and much less expensive than the train. Check the schedules - the times I thought of using it, they did not run often.

We have a friend visiting and yesterday she took the train from Gatwick to Dorchester (1 change) but there were staff shortages because of a strike scheduled for today and a 3 hour journey turned into 4 hours. She ended up changing trains twice I think.

We stayed in a hotel in Bath for only a couple of nights in 2013. I don't remember much about where we ate except for one lunch at a pub called The Raven. I fondly remember pork and leeks sausages served with chips and gravy and washed down with a wide selection of beer. Delicious!
