Best route, Normandy to the Dordogne

Hello there,

In June we will be traveling from the D-Day beaches area of Normandy south to the Sarlat area of the Dordogne by car. We have 3 nights to get there. Does anyone have suggestions for a route, based on wonderful things to see or eat along the way? We will have just been on the coast in Normandy, so are open to an inland route, or cutting back to the coast a bit. We are traveling with our kids who are ages 10 and 13. Thanks in advance for any tips--we have never traveled in this part of France.

I have been to the Normandy beaches and to the Dordogne, but we did not drive in between. Looking at the straight route, you are passing through the heart of the Loire. Tours might be a nice place to stop, or one of the smaller Loire Valley towns, like Chinon (very pretty).

Further south is Limoges which I have not been too but have heard it is interesting.

I would spend a night just north of the Dordogne, near or in Perigueux. I don't know that area but would like to see some of it myself.

Google Maps shows it as a six hour drive. You could have two nights in the Loire, if you haven't been there already and a night in northern Perigord.

Hi Pauline,

Thanks so much for the response. It confirms our plan! I've got a few inquiries out for places to stay near Chinon, and then want to get closer to the Dordogne for third night, possibly close enough to do a cave tour in the morning before checking into our next lodging near Sarlat.
