First post here but "slow" forums offer the best advice imo and we have not been led wrong yet. I am planning a trip with my husband for Aug/Sep 2017 to Italian lakes and Switzerland and I am looking for your expert opinions on best route.
Would this work? How could it work better?
Arrive Geneva - 3 nights including CERN tour
Rent car for 1 week in Swiss village rental (Where?)
Drive to Chur
Drop car at train station and take Bernina to Tirano , then tfr to train to Varenna
1 week at lake rental -no car
Train to Milan 3 days
Depart Milan for return to Toronto

- 3 weeks : 2 x 1wk rental in 2 different bases, with week for city arrivals/departures and travel. Base preferred to be in walkable village with markets and a good bistro or two, within day trip distance of interesting sites.
- Mix of car and train
- Must include CERN (Geneva) yes I am a bit of a geek, and scenic mountain train
- We are fairly fit 50 ish couple who enjoy scenery from a viewpoint sitting down with wine more than hiking to find it, but sunny walks through gentle countryside is nice too. We have been to Italy many times from Venice to Sicily, but never to Milan and lakes, or Switzerland.
- Nice to haves: a bit of art and a bit of hot spring spas
