Just binged Life...the new series by Mike Bartlett (Dr. Foster). It deals with the lives and relationships of the residents of a four-unit apartment building in Manchester. On the soapy side but extremely well done....outstanding performances by Alison Steadman, Adrian Lester and Virginia Hamilton.

If you are looking for something really soapy but well done, you can't go wrong with the Australian series "A Place to Call Home". Six seasons long, excellent acting and slightly over the top plotting but extraordinarily compelling at least through the middle of Season 5. By then, you need to find out how it all comes out. Marta Dusseldorp--seemingly as ubiquitous in Australian television as Nicola Walker is in the UK--is the refined and very attractive lead but all the roles are very well played.

The series features an unusual Jewish subplot (which surprised me) and is very frank about gay relationships in 1950s Australia.

It is streaming on Acorn in the US and was recently on the BBC iPlayer but only Season 6 is available at this time.

Another soapy but good series is Queen Sugar created by Ava DuVernay for the Oprah Winfrey Network. A drama about an African-American family in Louisiana, it deals with many contemporary issues but is at its heart about family dynamics. There are four seasons and they are streaming on Hulu. A fifth season is now in production.
