We have a bit more than two weeks in mid- September for a London- Canterbury trip.
We plan to spend about a week in London, our favorite city, then train to…
Rye? Maidstone? Someplace for a night or two before several days in Canterbury.

Suggestions? We like history, museums, cultural activities and gardens.

Thanks

You could consider staying near the Sissinghurst Gardens. Or Hever Castle (where Anne Boleyn lived). I think you can stay in the grounds of Hever Castle.

Have a look at the National Trust website. There are a lot of well known gardens in the south east. It might be possible to stay somewhere where you can visit more than one.

Rye is a pretty, historic town.

Lots to choose from.

Rye would more than meet your criteria. It is still very unspoilt and has a lot of character with its cobbled streets and higgledy pigledy houses. It is small and walkable and has a lot of things to do and see. There's lots of information and pictures on the Slow Europe travel article here. Also look at the town map here - there are some wonderful place names on it. The Mermaid Inn is over 600 years old and you could sleep in a four poster bed...

Great Dixter Gardens is less than ten miles from Rye. Lamb House Gardens are in the centre of Rye. They may not be very big but are a lovely peaceful place to visit.

You have also got Romney Marsh with its history of smuggling. Winchelsea is just a couple of miles from Rye and is even smaller but is also bursting with history. It would make a very pleasant day out from Rye.

Thanks, All..Rye is On the List…looks like lots of good day trips from Canterbury. So, in true Slow Europe fashion, we will base ourselves there and travel out.

Cbury has a great deal, too. Not just the Cathedral

Cheers..
