New Direct Train Between Roma Termini and Pompei Ferrovie dello Stato Station every Sunday

Beginning today, July 16, Trenitalia has a new DIRECT (no changes) Frecciarossa train between Roma Termini and Pompei (Ferrovie dello Stato station), which runs in both directions EVERY THIRD SUNDAY OF THE MONTH.
NOTE: THIS IS NOW EVERY SUNDAY.

Ordinarily, one must take a fast train from Rome to Napoli Centrale, then connect to the local unreserved Circumvesuviana commuter train to Pompei SCAVI station. Alternatively, one could connect to the more expensive, reserved Campania Express train to Pompei SCAVI-Villa dei Misteri station (which runs along the same tracks and departs/arrives in the same location as the regular Circumvesuviana commuter train).

But starting today, one could also take the DIRECT Trenitalia Frecciarossa train to and from Pompei Ferrovie dello Stato Station (NOT NOT the Pompei Scavi station), which runs only every third Sunday of the month, as follows:

Depart Roma Termini 8:53 a.m.
Arrive Pompei FS Station 10:40 a.m. (listed as "Pompei" on the Trenitalia website)

Depart Pompei FS Station 18:40
Arrive Roma Termini 20:55

These Frecciarossa trains stop at Napoli Afragola and Napoli Centrale, but continue on to the Pompei FS Station.

The Pompei FS Station is 850 meters from the southern entrance to the Pompei Archeological Park, (Piazza Immacolata, near the Roman Amphitheatre) and there MAY be available a Trenitalia shuttle bus for passengers arriving at and departing from the Pompei Station going to the archeological park.

The regular, "Base" Trenitalia fare between Rome and Pompei is 51 Euros ONE-WAY. However, discounted fares as low as 19.90 Euros one-way can be found with an advance purchase. Look for the "Speciale Frecce" non-refundable, non-changeable fare on the website. There are periodic special offers when the Speciale Frecce fare (as well as the Super Economy fare) can be further discounted by 20%, but one must consult the website often well in advance to find these special offers, which have a tight expiration window.

This new direct train service will be useful only for those going to the Pompei archeological park on the THIRD SUNDAY OF EACH MONTH. For everyone else, an easy train connection at Napoli Centrale will be required, as noted above. The Circumvesuviana trains depart from and arrive at the Napoli Garibaldi Station, which is underground to Napoli Centrale. It takes less than 10 minutes to walk between these two stations, along a well sign-posted, illuminated and air conditioned pedestrian walkway, lined with shops and eateries. If planning to connect at Napoli Centrale, I recommend allowing at least 30 minutes connection time, to allow for possible delays in arriving trains (from Roma Termini or from Pompei Scavi).

The new direct service which began today was given wide publicity on Italian television, owing also to the presence on board the train of the Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni.

(Campania Express trains are shown in red, marked "EXP"). These trains, designed primarily for tourists, make fewer stops, are all air conditioned and are much less crowded than the regular Circumvesuviana trains (some of which may not be air conditioned and are often very crowded). However, they cost more than the regular train (15 Euros versus 3 Euros, one-way, 25 Euros versus 6 Euros, round-trip). Trenitalia customers get a 10% discount on the Campania Express trains.

Yes, I've been following this, and I was previously seeing stories that in 2024 a direct train from Rome to the archeological site is planned:

This would presumably be more frequent than once a month. For the service that started today, on the Trenitalia site you can enter Pompei Scavi as the destination and it shows a Pompei Link bus from the city station to the site as part of the itinerary.
